You should definitely do that.

Depending on the OS inside the VM, you need to install the virtio
drivers too.

I use qemu-img and convert it to qcow2 or raw disk images, works great
without extra steps to take.

Performance also greatly depends on the underlying file system and how
busy your disks/raid are/is.
