[PVE-User] Stale NFS Mount - System Instability

Greetings- 

I recently experienced an odd issue where, due to failure of an NFS host handling backups for a Proxmox cluster, several nodes stopped responding properly. They appear as offline in the web interface, and I/O is very slow, even to non-NFS destinations. 

Is this a known issue where a stale or timed out NFS mount will cause the system to misbehave quite poorly? Would an alternate network storage protocol such as iSCSI perform better in that scenario?
