In our setup we have the OpenVPN server on a dedicated VM. It has the 
VPN port forwarded from the hypervisor and has worked like a charm, we 
use it to access all VMs with the private IPs from the office with a 
permanent VPN.

We have not used containers so I can't comment about them.
