[PVE-User] database performance: KVM or Physical machine

we have good specs server machines on which multiple Windows 2008 R2
servers are installed
what is the recommended approach for using MS SQL database.
the reason i am asking because i read it on internet that people
recommended to  install database server on separate physical machine for
better performance.

so is it just a misconception or virtual machines can also give us the same
processing power?
