How do you connect to the storage, NFS or iSCSI?
What file system do you use on your storage?

iSCSI in FreeBSD (NAS4Free and FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD) is unstable
on known to brake under heavy load.
ZFS on FreeBSD performs badly under iSCSI.

If you want to use iSCSI go for OpenSolaris, OpenIndiana, NexentaStore
or Omnios because they use a rock stable iSCSI implementation proven in
big data centers.

If you want to combine iSCSI and ZFS the only combination I have found
to perform and be stable is Omnios. For FreeNAS or NAS4Free like GUI
install napp-it.
