Of course you can, if the nodes are on the same LAN, logical (IP), not 
physical (Ethernet), like 192.168.0.0/24), and that LAN crosses the sites 
(VLAN, VPN or dedicated fiber connexion).
With a VPN across Internet, latency can be a problem, though.

Anyway, where I actually have my servers, there is two datacenters for real HA 
(electric power, flood...).
These two datacenters are 2 km away, and connected via several Fibers (for FC 
SAN and Ethernet switchs).
All the servers, in the two datacenters are on the same LAN, and of course we 
build clusters between the datacenters (Windows MSCS, HP-UX ServiceGuard, 
Linux heartbeat, pacemaker/corosync, RedHat CLuster Suite and Proxmox).

Ah, and also, multicast works.
