I saw this thread, as it's one of the only result when you try to search difference between scsi-hd, scsi-block and scsi-generic.
So, it looks like the main motivations were :

  * Have unmap supported
  * Better performance

Unmap is working with scsi-hd now, so it's not an advantage for scsi-generic anymore. There still is (at least theorical) performance advantages over scsi-hd. But IMHO, behing able to move disks live in every situations without risking a crash is more important.

Maybe adding a config tuning like :

scsi0: iscsi-zfs-prod:vm-114-disk-0,discard=on,size=45G,ssd=1,backend=<generic|block|hd>

But with a default value of hd ? With this those for which the perf benefit have more value than the migration risks can still use it, but the default is safer for everyone.
