just for the record, here the summary of the
offline discussion about this

for now we should add the vmstatestorage option to the gui
(to allow the user to overwrite the target storage)

and as soon as we have the api calls for
checking finer grained permissions on paths, we
can implmement a storage selection field which
has similar semantics as to the automatic selection in the backend
