I found a fix:

$ cd vncterm
$ git format-patch -o ../patches/ --subject-prefix="PATCH vncterm"
master..gitignore --cover-letter
$ cd ..
$ git format-patch --start-number=2 -o ../patches/
--subject-prefix="PATCH spiceterm" master..gitignore

^ see the "--start-number" parameter.
