I really need to dig the code.
So, proxmox use the qemu backup feature, but the only difference is the vma format ?

AFAIR nobody implemented that (in qemu-server). But the qemu patch is here: 

pve-qemu-kvm/debian/patches/pve/0017-backup-vma-add-dir-format.patch
