I don't think it's mandatory.

also writeback is special as writeback is caching on the gateway daemon, in /var/lib/sheepdog/cache

The sheepdog wiki says we should start with: 

# qemu-system-x86_64 -drive file=sheepdog:Alice,cache=writeback 

Do we really need to set cache to ‘writeback’?
