What kind of storage do you use? That sounds awfully long for 500GB.

As a side note: This is also a point where Proxmox Backup Server comes
in handy, at least for VMs: There we have something that is called a 
'dirty bitmap' - essentially QEMU tracks which parts of the disks have 
been written to since the last backup. This significantly speeds up
further backups. However, as mentioned, this is only available for VMs,
not LXC containers.
