With 5.4 you can set the VM's display to serial in the 'Create VM'
Wizard - then everything is setup correctly.

For an already existing virtual machine it's 2 changes (both in the
VMs Hardware tab):
* Add a serial port
* Change the Display to 'Serial terminal' (with the appropriate serial
  device if you have more than one)

(The guest OS configuration needs to be done on the guest of course).

AFAIR plan9p+qemu had a few security and performance issues - hence our
general recommendation is to use a shared storage between the VM's (a
NFS/CIFS share mounted in all guests (and the node))
