Hi,

that multipath does not start at boot is a bug in multipath-tools 0.5.0.
I've upgraded to multipath-tools 0.6.1.3 (from backports) and this bug is fixed. But that is not my problem.

HP MSA 1040, 1GBit/s backend, PVE 4.2.

I've not noticed your trouble, but i've noticed that sometime (90%
roughly) multipath does not start correctly on boot, so i've setup a
simple script that restart multipath.

I've never done a restore, but i think cannot be so much different of
any ''high io'' task on the SAN.

Mine is much simpler:

# Parametri di default.
#
defaults {
        polling_interval        2
        path_selector           "round-robin 0"
        path_grouping_policy    multibus
        getuid_callout          "/lib/udev/scsi_id -g -u -d /dev/%n"
        rr_min_io               100
        failback                immediate
        no_path_retry           queue
}

# Di default blacklistiamo tutto.
#
blacklist {
        wwid .*
}

# Whitelisting esplicito dei singoli volumi.
#
blacklist_exceptions {
        wwid "3600c0ff00026ed1ea38e175701000000"
        wwid "3600c0ff00026ed1e6cae185701000000"
}

# Quindi elenco i multipath da tenere in considerazione.
#
multipaths {

        # VM0
        #
        multipath {
                wwid "3600c0ff00026ed1ea38e175701000000"
                alias mpath0
        }

        # VM1
        #
        multipath {
                wwid "3600c0ff00026ed1e6cae185701000000"
                alias mpath1
        }

}

Sorry, no.

PS: do you know that HP SAN are simply Dot Hill SAN rebranded? I say
 that because you can search also for that...
