Have you tried the ZFS over iscsi plugin?
https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Storage:_ZFS_over_iSCSI

Gives great performance and low IO/wait here to an Omnios (Solaris) ZFS
store (Infiniband DDR 20Gb).
