shutdown is not necessary but if one take a live backup or snapshot it
means when clone machine restored and started the behavior of that
machine would be like it has been power recycled  or abnormally
restarted. so the point of consideration is not snapshot or any thing
but the main concern is, would this running VM bear a force restart or
if some thing might corrupt in force restart will end with no luck and
the backup will be of no worth.
