As far as I know, XenServer and VMWare do this via their installable drivers/apps, and not through some strange voodoo magic.  It would be relatively straight forward to have an app running on the ProxMox VM that responds to queries with the required info and have the web interface do the query.

It requires code to be written for all platforms though, so there would be a fair amount of work to do, if you want to do it.
