If I read this correctly, you're mounting an nfs volume and trying to
back up to that?
If so, check in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages - look for where
the nfs logs are. Heck, if you're lucky, there's a /var/log/nfs.
Also, check the logs on both this client *and* the server - that may
shed some light on it.
I bet it's a problem with NFS. I've had numerous performance issues with
it on Linux over the years.
