You are right if you think of it as file storage SERVICE. I was to close
to the hardware layer...
Virtualizing a file server DOES make sense to me.

It might do... if your virtualisation layer isn't that much of an 
overhead, virtualising it could give you some redundancy, as you can 
bring the NAS VM (and so the NAS service) back online on a different
host...
