[PVE-User] Very slow server (RAW IDE discs and KVM)

Hallo all,
I wonder why about the same DSK line gives the feeling of a slow Win2003 and a good Win2008 server.
Has someone experience with the behaviour of large sparse files? May there be an overhead handling the sparse file (so there is much less I/O on the guest than we see on host)? Maybe a changed block allocation strategy between windows versions?
Regards
Holger

Hi Matthew,
Thank you for your reply.
The drive could be slow, but do you think it is normal when only 2 VM's are running with one of them being idle that these ATOP stats are shown when copying data?
Stats:

sda is both pegged and really slow. My write rate is double that, and my read rate is 20 times that, and the drives are reporting 75% usage.
These are crappy 7200 RPM desktop-grade drives in a software RAID1 mirror. Nothing special.
