It was 32-bit under 8.10 and also 32-bit now in 9.04:

Linux 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux

My second 8.10 to 9.04 upgraded PC (also 32-bit) that is also exhibiting
the problem is not a critical machine.  I'm happy to run tests or
experiments on it to try to figure out what's happening.
