Todays storages are easily controlled with CLI and/or http[s] APIs. I have pretty old HP MSA P2000 SAS and Netapp 2040 FC/iSCSI. Certainly, they're both support basic lun management like create-resize-snapshot-delete, which we have with LVM. Moreover, Netapp one supports advanced features like thin provisioning, compression and data de-duplication, which are not available with LVM, but fully controlled via CLI and API of storage.
