I think you need a really recent kernel for guest.
and also recent udev
(I think that hotplugged memory need to be "onlined" through sysfs, maybe you can do it manually without udev)

i could fix the "error" by using
-m 2048,slots=32,maxmem=64G
instead of
-m 2048,slots=32,maxmem=65536
seems it wants a XG value for maxmem.
Now adding memory and adding a new dimm device does not give an error
anymore but there's also nothing happending inside the guest.
I applied:
http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/292614/
and have then done
make bios in the rom directory of qemu
