I think it should be ok, if balloon is enable and guest don't have the balloon driver, it doesn't hang, it just doesn't return stats.

I'll try in on some linux and windows guest today.

Btw, I just committed some patches to add the 'shares' property for 
auto-ballooning. 

And I enable balloon driver by default now to get memory stats. I hope 
that will not cause problems?
